The Historical Association of South Haven will welcome Erika K. Hartley for a presentation entitled: “Archaeology and Collections: Researching Fort St. Joseph” on Tuesday, September 17.
The program will cover the investigations pursued at Fort St. Joseph, first established in the 1680s by French Jesuits. The settlement, one of the earliest in the western Great Lakes region, went on to function as a garrison and a trading post. The site has produced thousands of religious, military and domestic artifacts revealing the lives of those who once occupied this frontier outpost.
Erika Hartley is the director of the Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, curatorial fellow through the Niles History Center, and part time instructor for the Institute for Intercultural & Anthropological Studies at Western Michigan University.
This program will take place at our Hartman School building, located at 355 Hubbard St. and is free and open to the public.
