Join us March 28th at Hartman School for a very special presentation. Ron Taylor, trustee and member of Mary’s City of David, 1977, whose grandparents joined the House of David at Sydney Australia in 1919, will come to the Historical Association of South Haven on March 28th, 7PM to share his facts and illuminations upon the numerous fables, myths and scandalous stories concerning the colony’s history.
Clare Adkin wrote his authoritative book, Brother Benjamin, 1990, in hopes to correct the many errors and fallacies concerning the history of the House of David. Robert Fogarty’s, Righteous Remnant, 1982, was one of his targets. Adkin’s title was carefully chosen as a rebuff to the pulp journalism of the 1920s that sarcastically dubbed Benjamin Purnell as, “king Ben”. Time has passed and Adkin’s attempt seems to have failed in reflection of the numerous publications that continue the misinformation and often add more to the confusion.
Starting with an explanation of the deep and complex roots of the House of David in England of the 1650s, the talk will also display many artifacts and documents that will help to understand a religious movement that today, the House of David is still very much a part of.
The talk will include examining the stories of a “Siberia of Michigan”, the House of David’s lumber business on High Island; buried treasures on the colony properties; why the Purnell’s came to Benton Harbor to make a home for their international following; and of course a good look at the sensational court trials of the 1920s.
