For over 100 years, summer residents from all over the United States have come to the north side of South Haven to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. If they were particularly fortunate, they had a cottage in the Monroe Park subdivision on the North Beach.
This area comes alive in a DVD that chronicles the history and lifestyle of the area in a heartwarming video production created by Helen O’Rourke, a homeowner in Monroe Park since 1968. Enlisting neighboring homeowners Ken and Lynda Hogan as research assistants, Helen has written a companion book entitled “Cottages and Resorts on the North Beach.” This volume traces the history and the homes of the “L. S. Monroe Park Subdivision” from its beginnings in the 1890s until the 1960s when demolitions and remodeling began a transformation of the area that continues to this day.
